About a month ago, I published my second iteration on how to stand up an XMPP server running Prosody. Since then, I’ve been playing around with my configuration and have finally had the courage to put the implementation into Production. This post contains the final process and configuration I used. I’m posting it here in pretty much raw form as I’ve already documented much of the context in previous posts. The main differences between my last iteration and this one is that in the final Production implementation, I elected to go with the nightly-build (trunk
) version of Prosody as it has some additional features already included. In addition, this version of my post includes steps on how to enable a number of community modules which helps improve the quality of the XMPP experience. If you have any questions or comments, you can now reach me at samir@parikh.im.

UPDATE from 22 November 2021 and 14 December 2021:
If you try to renew your Let’s Encrypt certificates while the Prosody service is running, you may encounter an error similar to:
Attempting to renew cert (example.com) from /etc/letsencrypt/renewal/example.com.conf produced an unexpected error: Problem binding to port 80: Could not bind to IPv4 or IPv6.. Skipping.
If that happens to you, one possible solution is to temporarily stop the Prosody service:
$ sudo systemctl stop prosody.service
Renew your certs:
$ sudo certbot renew
Import your new certificates:
$ sudo prosodyctl --root cert import /etc/letsencrypt/live
And then restart the Prosody service:
$ sudo systemctl start prosody.service
Make changes to /etc/prosody/prosody.cfg.lua
